What is the Dave Thorne Bursary?
It’s a memorial fund set up to assist children and young people from Oxfordshire who would like to attend its Outdoor Education Centres but are unable to do so due to financial constraints. Pupils who attend outdoor education courses gain skills such as climbing or navigation, whilst learning how to work safely with others and overcome challenges. For some it can be a crucial week in their personal development; many claim it is the best week of their lives.
Who was Dave Thorne?
Dave Thorne taught at Woodlands OEC for nearly 20 years before that he was a teacher at Henry Box School Witney. He died in January 2007, in a canoeing accident whilst on holiday in the Lake District. He was an inspirational teacher/coach, husband to Sue, father of two and friend. He was well known for his beaming smile and well respected for both his understanding of Oxfordshire children/young people and also his technical knowledge. He was a source of local information and often advised on the best use of venues and equipment.
Dave overcame many challenges in his lifetime and was an inspiration to children and staff alike.
Who oversees the bursary?
This bursary has been set up, under the auspices of the Oxfordshire Outdoor Learning Trust, by Dave’s family and friends to honour his commitment to the development of young people and to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors. Lesley Williams is one of the trustees and she is based at Oxford County Council, Cricket road. It is a registered charity No 1075765.
Applications for financial support from the Bursary should be made to Chris Pierce, Head of Centre at Woodlands.
